We Want You! The Talon Times needs writers, join our amazing team!

Soccer is a very popular sport all around the world, but with the World Cup coming to the United States, it is especially prevalent in our country today. But enough about soccer on the national level! Jamestown is known for its excellent soccer teams, and at the Talon Times, we had the chance to interview the newest up-and-coming team: Girls’ Junior Varsity.

While the team itself is new and some members are still learning the basics, others have been involved in the game for a long time; team members Katie Tompkins and Kaylee Fefferman have been playing since they were five, and Evelyn Frigiola has been playing since she was four years old! Having these players with more experience has significantly benefitted the team and allowed them to grow more together as they improve their skills. As Julie Tompkins states, “We’re getting better every game,” and the many hours they spend on the field has helped. Like a lot of other teams, the Girls’ JV team practices every day of the week except for Fridays to put in the amount of dedication necessary for the sport.

The JV team has also worked on communication a lot during the year. Because a significant number of players are playing their first season, having strong communication has helped. One way they worked on this was having a team bonding night at one of the girls’ houses. As freshman Kaylee Fefferman said, they had the chance to let their emotions out and have a fun night together. Throughout the season, because of their strong communication, the girls have gotten progressively better.

Everyone on the team can agree that their first goal of the season was one of the most special moments of the season. When Katie Tompkins got fouled during a game, Nancy Vogel went to take the penalty kick and scored! In celebration, Kaylee Fefferman hit the sea lion, and the entire team was very excited.

We are pretty far into the spring season, but there are still opportunities to see the JV team play. The next home game will be on May 5 at Wanner Stadium. Come out to support them if you have the chance!
