I’m sure you’ve heard of the launch of Artemis II by now, but what is it?
The Artemis missions are a series of 5 planned missions to the Moon, with the eventual goal of setting up a permanent Moon base. The first mission was an uncrewed mission designed to test flight and ground systems before launching Artemis II. Artemis II was the first time humans had been to the Moon since the space race, with Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, Christina Hammock Koch, and Jeremy Hansen orbiting the Moon, conducting tests, and providing updated maps and information. Artemis III will be used to test the docking mechanisms of both SpaceX and Blue Origin to ensure stability. In Artemis IV, astronauts will land on the Moon for the first time this century, using a commercial lunar lander. Finally, in Artemis V, astronauts will attempt to set up a permanent moon base.
