Welcome to the winter months of bleakness. With dark gray skies and dying vegetation surrounding us, only one beauty truly makes up for it, snow. The excitement of constantly checking the weather to find that the predictions for snow have grown another two inches is something that cannot be underestimated. However, no one can rest comfortably until the WJCC Schools notification comes out. As a student at Jamestown, I can sympathize with the many people who feel immense joy when the snow actually sticks.
Snow is not something that is incredibly prevalent in our area, but there have been a multitude of instances throughout the years where many have found their boots digging inches deep into the snow. One notable example of this is Snowmageddon. In February 2010, many areas in the northeast were covered in snow around 30 inches deep, including the Williamsburg area. Several sources show that with this immense precipitation, there weren’t enough snowplows for the area, causing many people were stuck in their homes for days on end.
While snow is not always a normal occurrence in Williamsburg, the chance of it happening at least once a year is relatively high. According to Mr. Williamsburg, owner of a well-established blog relating to Williamsburg, Virginia, this area has had an average of 7.8 inches of snow from the years 1946-2010. I am not a meteorologist, but I can say that the snow outlook is relatively high this year, with multiple snow days in the district having already occurred.
On top of the fun, snow is also mentally beneficial. Good Therapy states, “Snow days provide a great opportunity for a break because we cannot change Mother Nature.” Being forced to stay at home and relax because of weather conditions is a much-needed respite from daily life. In the business of daily life, snow days act as a counterbalance to the rough, fast-moving days, and we should all continue to be grateful for them.
