Pi Day is one of the most celebrated holidays in March and for good reason! Pi day has its roots in the universal language, math, and can be enjoyed by people everywhere.
This holiday was first celebrated in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw on March 14 (3.14) in San Francisco, California. During this event, people commemorated the mathematical symbol by having a circular parade, and of course, eating pies. Pi Day was later officially recognized by the US House of Representatives in 2009 and has been loved ever since.
Pi Day is great in multiple ways. Not only does it serve as a fun day of celebration, but this particular event also encourages people, especially students, to continue to grow in their knowledge of math and science.
Some common ways to celebrate Pi Day include learning more about the roots of this holiday, making a chain with as many digits of pi written on it as possible, doing fun crafts, and taste-testing various kinds of pies.

In honor of Pi Day, we would like to share with you the results from a schoolwide survey on Jamestown’s favorite flavors of pie. Although each option is well-loved, the ultimate overall winner was Apple Pie. However, the results were very widespread throughout each grade level and flavor preferences!

While freshmen preferred Oreo pie the most, sophomores liked pumpkin. However, both juniors and seniors agreed that apple pie was supreme! It was a difficult battle the entire way through, but no flavor was neglected wholly.
Congratulations to both the freshman and senior classes for tying for the most participants in your grade level! Please stay on the lookout for next month’s survey in order to have your opinion mentioned in the newspaper.
